Don't Be Lazy, Read About Soccer Motivation

Can you tell me the number one reason soccer performance declines in certain players? The biggest and most common reason that affects soccer performance is soccer motivation or lack of it. Without motivation all soccer players will crumble under the various pressures and problems soccer manages to throw up.

Players are motivated by 2 methods. Motivating yourself or personal self-motivation is referred to as intrinsic while being motivated by outside forces such as coaches, team mates or fans is referred to as extrinsic. Generally speaking, motivation is guided by the hope of success and the fear of failure.

So why do so many talented and gifted players give up the game they love so much? They quit the game they love due to the lack of self belief and the lack of confidence. When you lack these two traits there is a good chance you also lack motivation.

All players dream of playing on the big stage but without motivation, all these players will not be prepared to put in the extra training and effort required to succeed. Time spent on the park and in the gym would diminish significantly. So how do we motivate soccer players?

The answer to the above question has no specific or correct answer. Also there is no specific method or perfect method to motivating players. Circumstance, level of professionalism and the individual require different levels of motivation.

The following are suggestions that will allow any coach to keep their team motivated. For starters, all coaches should encourage their players. Always encourage fun and hard work at training. This will keep your players returning to training and will also develop their skills while still having fun.

Always remain positive and enthusiastic. Your enthusiasm and positivity will eventually rub off on your team. Place more emphasis on the positive aspects of your team rather than the negative. Under no circumstance are you to yell at your players or embarrass them. Always offer help and suggestions on improvement in a positive and friendly manner. It's important to build friendships with your players based on honesty and positivity.

Another great way to keep players motivated is by setting goals. Try developing short term and long term goals. Measure and record improvements and this will inevitably keep your players hungry for more self development. But remember to set small, achievable goals that will build confidence and self esteem.

Last but not least, the best way to keep your players motivated is by being supportive. Always respect your players and they will also return the favor. When players make mistakes remind them that the best players in the world make mistakes and that they shouldn't worry. Remind them that we all make mistakes and through these mistakes they will eventually become better players.

All coaches should get to know all their players and speak to them as a team and on an individual basis. Praise their strengths and mention their weaknesses in an honest and friendly manner. Never use intimidation or fear as a tool to teach young players. If you follow the above suggestions I can guarantee you that your team will be motivated and keen to learn.
